Job Description

The Department of Performing and Media Arts is housed within the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. Its walls encompass the elements needed for teaching and performance in theatre, film, and media and dance: four performance spaces; dance and theatre rehearsal studios; a sound stage; scenery, costume and prop shops; sound and lighting design studios; and film editing and production suites. The Schwartz Center serves as a catalyst for the creative and intellectual endeavors of the many talented students, faculty and staff at Cornell.

The department leads students from all disciplines through artistic and scholarly explorations of live and mediated forms of creativity and expression. Students are challenged to think creatively, critically, and historically about the world around them as they identify and interpret the power of image, sound, gesture, and movement and cultivate their own artistic and academic voices.

In a team environment, prepares production budget for annual season of performances and events; monitors expenditures against budget; supports box office operations; initiates contact and negotiates and administers contracts with artists and companies.

This position manages the academic (~25 professorial, RTE and visiting) and nonacademic staff appointments (a staff of 16, including 9- and 10-month employees), reappointments, reclassifications, and terminations; prepares position descriptions and job postings. Participates in interviewing, hiring of administrative staff. Supports academic search committees and prepares required reporting, processes and tracks faculty appointments. Creates student job requisitions, appoints and tracks temporary student hires and coordinates timecard approvals.

In addition to being the primary resource for faculty & staff on broad range of university, college and department financial and HR-related policies and procedures and training new faculty and staff in those procedures, this position tracks donations and helps develop the department's alumni community. The Assistant Manager supervises and trains the Front Office Administrative Assistant, who provides financial support to the department, and assists the Senior Department Manager on special projects as needed.
