Job Summary and Qualifications

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) ensures high-quality, patient-centered care by leading clinical and quality initiatives that support consistent clinical performance and standards across the hospital. The CMO provides senior leadership for infection control, risk management, safety, and medical staff credentialing, ensuring collaboration among stakeholders. They analyze quality performance, identify improvement opportunities, and contribute to hospital strategy and service development to enhance quality and patient experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading clinical performance to ensure superior outcomes and patient experience.
  • Collaborating with hospital leadership, medical staff, and boards to improve medical staff effectiveness.
  • Partnering with medical staff and management to foster teamwork and shared goals.
  • Providing clinical support for cost-effective resource management.
  • Creating a data-driven environment for quality and cost improvement.
  • Serving as liaison between physicians and hospital/clinical services.
  • Developing medical education programs and ongoing training for medical staff leaders.
  • Leading educational sessions on clinical resource management and quality issues.
  • Forming regional physician advisory panels and liaising with facility and corporate leadership.
  • Explaining and promoting clinical initiatives and evidence-based practices.
  • Collaborating with other CMOs and hospital teams daily.
  • Educating physicians on HCA technologies and formulary opportunities.
  • Developing policies for physician conduct and impairment monitoring.
  • Consulting on physician credentialing, utilization, and quality profiling.
  • Evaluating new medical technologies and programs for hospital relevance.
  • Supporting physician recruitment, clinical program development, and hospital strategy.
  • Providing medical direction on contracting and managed care issues.
  • Supporting case management and denials reduction efforts.
  • Participating in corporate and national meetings on quality and safety.
  • Promoting positive patient interactions and evidence-based medicine practices.
  • Serving as a spokesperson for clinical practice, safety, and quality initiatives.
  • Fostering collaboration between hospital leadership and medical staff.
  • Ensuring clinical excellence through performance metrics.
  • Facilitating improvements in physician and patient satisfaction.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO required.
  • Masters degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 10+ years of clinical practice experience required.
  • Experience as a CMO or equivalent in a large hospital or health system preferred.
  • Current and valid medical license in any US state required.
  • Board certification required.
