Classical Music Host and Producer

Location: Portland or Bangor, Maine

 

Join the Maine Public team as a full-time Classical Music Host and Producer and help spread the joy of classical music! This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing classical service as Maine Public Classical steps up to preserve - and grow appreciation for - classical music, and connect a very loyal audience to our state’s vibrant arts communities.

 

Working with our Manager of Classical Music, and alongside fellow members of the Classical Team, the Host and Producer will bring a personable and conversational approach to engaging listeners and supporters, including both seasoned classical music connoisseurs and those new to and curious about the genre. The Host and Producer will deliver context, connection, and companionship through a variety of work behind the mic, online and on socials. Maine Public Classical serves as a destination for listener discovery – of exciting cultural events across the state, local artists and ensembles, global classical music talent and classical industry news. The Host and Producer will be a vital contributor to making that discovery experience rewarding and enjoyable for listeners.

 

Beyond the Host and Producer’s core responsibility of a daily on-air shift, duties also include hosting and production of a weekly concert program, occasional interviewing of local artists and arts leaders, on-air fundraising, participation in organizational events, representing Maine Public Classical at events around the state, and working to develop the music library. 

 

This position works on-site in our Portland or Bangor Studios,

the general schedule is currently Mondays through Fridays

with occasional nights, weekends, holidays.

Job Requirements: Associate degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least two years’ broadcasting and/or other audio production experience, as well as a classical music background as outlined below.

 

Additional Requirements:


  • Strong familiarity with classical music, its subgenres, and the broader classical music landscape of artists, ensembles and organizations, current and historical.

  • Solid foreign language pronunciation skills.

  • Ability to produce and host both live and voice tracked shows and associated promos.

  • Demonstrated capacity to adapt to and gain proficiency in new technologies.

  • Attention to detail and strong computer, organizational and communication (written, behind-the-mic and public speaking) skills.

  • Flexibility in schedule - to fill in for a live shift on short notice and participate in occasional evening, weekend and/or holiday work.

  • Valid driver’s license - regular travel throughout the state.

  • A pre-employment criminal background check is required.

 

Strongly Preferred:

 


  • Experience in classical music announcing/production/hosting.

  • Proficiency in audio editing, automation and voice tracking software.

  • Familiarity with the Maine arts community.
