Job Summary:
The Tennessee Education Association (TEA) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Community Organizer . The ideal candidate will be passionate about grassroots organizing, with a deep commitment to empowering communities to advocate for public education.

The Community Organizer will be responsible for identifying and developing relationships with parents, students, educators, and community organizations. They will create and implement grassroots organizing strategies to drive meaningful action and influence policy changes. This role involves recruiting and training community leaders and educators, developing issue campaigns, and fostering collaboration with local organizations and allies. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, a skilled strategist, and a collaborative team player who is committed to advancing educational and social justice in Tennessee.

In this role, the Community Organizer will be required to travel across the state, work evenings and weekends, and support local affiliates. This position requires a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.

Key Responsibilities:
Community Outreach & Engagement:

  • Recruit and develop parent, student, and community leaders to support TEA’s organizing efforts.
  • Engage members through one-on-one meetings, phone calls, home visits, and community events.
  • Design and execute grassroots strategies to drive participation in TEA’s campaigns.

Campaign Development & Execution:

  • Develop and implement issue-based campaigns aligned with TEA’s goals.
  • Plan and manage local actions, advocacy days, and displays of support for public education.
  • Support other TEA campaigns, including electoral efforts, contract support and member recruitment initiatives.

Leadership Development:

  • Train and mentor local leaders to take charge of organizing efforts.
  • Facilitate workshops and leadership programs to strengthen organizational capacity.
  • Coalition Building & Partnerships:
  • Build relationships with local organizations and advocacy groups to expand support for TEA’s initiatives.
  • Collaborate with allies on joint campaigns and legislative advocacy efforts.
  • Assessment & Reporting:
  • Track campaign progress, evaluate effectiveness, and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Provide regular reports on progress and outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience in community organizing, union organizing, or related fields, with a proven track record of successful campaigns and tangible results.
  • A deep commitment to social justice, educational equity, and community empowerment.
  • Experience designing and implementing grassroots organizing strategies and campaigns.
  • Strong ability to recruit, train, and develop leaders from diverse backgrounds and communities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with organizing tools and platforms (e.g., VAN, Hustle, Action Network) and a willingness to embrace new technology.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Experience working on political campaigns or public policy initiatives, particularly those related to education and social justice.
  • Knowledge of education policy and issues affecting public education in Tennessee.
  • Experience with coalition-building and working with diverse community partners and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of how Community Schools initiatives address the unique needs of their communities through a combination of services, supports, and systemic changes to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
