Opportunities for remote work are rare. Job Description Northern Arizona University is seeking applications for researchers focused on the fate of permafrost carbon in a warming world. The research spans both field work and data synthesis, including a primary field location near Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The experimental research focuses on (1) net ecosystem carbon exchange (eddy covariance) from sites undergoing permafrost thaw, and (2) coupled radiocarbon measurements to detect loss of old carbon. Data from this site will be integrated with a larger network to develop an updateable time series of ecosystem exchange measurements across the permafrost region. The position involves spending some time during the field season in Alaska, with winters spent in Flagstaff, AZ, focusing on data synthesis and networking. The allocation of time will depend on individual and project needs. Research Assistant Responsibilities Work collaboratively with the research team in activities including data collection, evaluation, and designing analyses to address primary research questions. Design and implement research protocols, especially focusing on preparing and analyzing samples for radiocarbon analysis. Participate in laboratory analyses with staff scientists. Read scientific literature, participate in discussions, and attend meetings. Data Metrics - 20% Collect, curate, synthesize, and analyze research data. Display data for presentations and manuscript preparation using graphics and statistical software. Grant & Management - 10% Work within grant-specific project requirements. Academic/Lab/Community Liaison - 10% Assist in maintaining lab equipment, supplies, and general operations. Work with lab members on sample processing and analysis. Promote an inclusive and welcoming environment. Other Duties - 5% Perform other duties as assigned. Research Associate Responsibilities Work collaboratively on research activities including data collection, evaluation, and analysis. Lead data analysis, modeling, coding, and interpretation. Design and implement research protocols, focusing on radiocarbon sample analysis. Participate in radiocarbon analysis with staff scientists. Read literature, participate in discussions, and attend meetings. Co-author or author research papers and present at conferences. Data Metrics - 30% Collect, synthesize, analyze research data. Develop code, perform analysis, and create data pipelines. Display data for presentations and manuscripts, using graphics and statistical software. Document and archive code using version control software. Grant & Management - 10% Manage grant funds according to sponsor requirements. Academic/Lab/Community Liaison - 10% Perform lab duties, maintain equipment, and support project goals.
