Reconstructing Judaism seeks a full-time, hands-on controller to join the staff of our progressive, nonprofit organization. The controller provides financial expertise, assists in the development and implementation of financial strategies in support of our mission, and has primary direct responsibility for accounting operations and will supervise its bookkeeper. The successful candidate will work independently, will identify opportunities to improve processes and create efficiencies, will explain financial information to a variety of audiences, and will bring a high degree of accuracy and professionalism to their work. This position receives day-to-day supervision from the Director of Operations with ultimate oversight from the Executive Vice President.

 

 

Position Responsibilities  

 

Responsible for the performance of all accounting functions , including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting and budget monitoring, financial projections, banking, payroll, financial reporting, payroll tax review, audit preparation, restricted fund administration, government reporting and auxiliary services.

Ensures accurate and timely processing of all accounting transactions in compliance with GAAP requirements.

Performs all aspects of the month-end close process including the reconciliation of multiple cash, investment and credit card accounts.

  • Prepares monthly payroll and 401k submissions through isolved. Will be involved at the transactional level with the processing of the monthly payroll.
  • Prepares detailed payroll and benefit allocation entries in Excel by employee and funder, posts entries in Financial Edge.
  • Responsible for accumulating and posting periodic transactional activity from Shopify, Authorize.net and Stripe into Financial Edge.
  • Completes semi-annual student tuition billing with add/drops each term for approximately 50 students, records activity in Financial Edge and issues 1098-Ts at year-end.
  • Prepares and maintains workpapers supporting balances for all balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare, manage and serve as the primary point of contact for the annual external financial statement audit.
  • Ensures that appropriate documentation is being maintained for all restricted gifts, institutional grants and other receivables.
  • Establishes new grants in accounting software, produces grant expense reports and prepares financial reporting to meet all grant reporting requirements.
  • Assists with developing yearly restricted funds reports for valuation.
  • Supervises bookkeeper who has responsibility for vendor payments through BILL.com, bank deposits and the posting of cash receipts.
  • Oversees regular payments through BILL.com to offsite interns, independent contractors and other non-payroll payees.
  • Files 1099s and any additional calendar-year-end tax documents.

 

 

Produces monthly financial reports , including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities with comparisons to budget, Cash Flow Statement, and Rolling Forecast. 

  • Develops and delivers accompanying analysis and commentary summarizing significant financial information.
  • Submits financial reports to senior management and to the Treasurer of the Board of Governors and Finance Committee, explains key results, and answers questions. Will be expected to develop multi-year budget and forecasting process.
  • Updates the restricted balances report monthly and provides support and education for department heads in understanding the availability of purpose-restricted funds.
  • Provides financial data to various reporting agency websites as required as well as quarterly sales tax reporting.
  • Advises the Executive Vice President, Director of Operations, President/CEO and/or the Board Treasurer regarding financial matters; helps develop and implement financial policies and procedures.
  • Works with department heads to develop an annual departmental budget in Excel. 
  • Provides monthly budget variance reports to department heads and reports overall budget versus actual results to leadership.

 

Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting (CPA/MBA preferred)
  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Excellent understanding of both GAAP and accounting for nonprofits
  • Previous experience with fund accounting and expense allocation.
  • Demonstrated advanced proficiency in Excel (candidates will be required to pass a skills assessment to demonstrate proficiency)
  • Direct experience with Financial Edge or similar software 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, and other basic office technologies and software
  • Hands on experience preparing payroll and managing the payroll process. Experience with iSolved is a plus.
  • Bill.com or other online bill vendor payment software experience
  • Experience with Shopify, Authorize.net and/or Stripe is a plus.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefit eligible position based in Wyncote, PA. A hybrid schedule including working from home up to two days per week will be available with at least 3 days per week performed onsite at our Wyncote, PA campus just outside Philadelphia.
